Maybe there is a wide swath of the population that goes outdoors to do battle with tools instead of bringing proper weapons but I'm not one of them and so far (thankfully) haven't run into any of them. A Knife marketed as a spear, A shovel marketed as a hand to hand combat weapon etc. Not owning any of their products I can't speak to their quality but I find it strange that Cold Steel sell primarily knives (and some other tools) but for the most part market them as something else entirely. This is really why I take exception with the entire cold steel marketing department and subsequently, their product line. If you're a fan of cold steel products avert your eyes or just downvote me to oblivion. It's much more helpful than their marketing. Thanks for posting some actual use information. Since no one else has linked to it here's the manufacturer's product page: Sorry, Lorax420 did link to it. not a problem if you have other tools, but it would have been better to leave at least one surface thicker and unsharpened. My only complaint is that it should come with a nice kydex sheath stock, also being sharp on all sides of the spade one cannot really baton split. given enough time, and a suitable location I could totally build a little dugout shelter with this tool. I've seen the collapsible shovels before, never bought one because they felt so jankey, the cold steel shovel is solid, really fucking solid.
I was crunching through tons of stone, bits of concrete rubble etc without really damaging the edge.
It shipped very sharp and made short work of the grasses I harvested. It feels safer than a machete and better suited for hacking away at ground level. This shovel has instantly become one of my favorite pieces of kit. hacking at grasses, small bushes, and trees suitable for shelter building, and I got to say I'm in love. I was digging up feral edibles in a gravel pit. I spent most of this morning with this new toy.
